Testing the XQ-58A Valkyrie Combat Air Drone
This is a new drone developed by the US Army to experiment with a possible new type of pilotless combat fighter.
They have made several test flights just to check their flight characteristics for now. The rest will come later.
The Americans have the most advanced attack drones, but until now they were devices that flew, captured information on the ground through sensors, and could launch missiles or bombs, but under remote human control
Now they go one step further. It is about testing the use of a possible combat fighter but without a pilot to drive it. It would be done remotely from the ground or from another plane and with the help of a powerful Artificial Intelligence system.
It will take many years, possibly more than ten, for an experimental prototype to become a finished product, but it may end up seeing the light.
We must not forget that they have spent more than 10 years trying to develop an autonomous car by several companies, and after spending more than 15 billion dollars, they are still far from achieving it, although they have come a long way
An airplane moves in three dimensions (a car in two) and at a high speed, making it much more complex, and if it also faces another combat aircraft, the reaction times to make decisions are very short, but it seems clear that the future is going that way, and the great powers will not stop trying.
Men (pilots) can be wrong despite being very well trained, but an electronic system can receive and process more information in less time than a person, but the fact of letting an AI system make decisions of attack by itself is a “big step” and I am not clear that it is in the right direction.
It is clear that technology (and automation) is being introduced in all the remnants of our actions and the military is one of them.
There is nothing that escapes its influence.
